J Dilla x Stussy World Tour Tee

February 14th, 2013 by Ian

To commemorate the seventh year since Jay Dee’s passing, Stussy teamed up with the J Dilla Estate to release the “World Tour Tee.” February 7th marked Dilla Day 2013 and what would have been the Detroit Hip Hop Producer’s 39th birthday. Stussy released the design in it’s signature font and style, with six different colorways: three black and three white shirts. I personally like the white shirt with all black font and colored donut.

Some of my favorite works from J Dilla are from Slum Village’s Fantastic Vol 2 Album and his solo career albums. I love to see streetwear brands as big as Stussy, show homage to one of the greatest producers of Hip Hop. I will share one of the best sample instrumentals he made(for those of you who have been with Dime A Dozen from the start, you would recognize this song playing in our old Myspace page).

Drake – Started From The Bottom

Drake Started From The Bottom

On Sunday night while the Grammy’s were “live” on tv in Gardena, Drake dropped visuals for his new single – Started From The Bottom off his upcoming album.  Originally the song was supposed to be released during the award show, but instead about a week ago Drake privately released the song himself, on his website with a note to his fans. I could tell you what the note says but summarizing it doesn’t really do it justice.  He’s been catching a ton of criticism as of late for his humble beginnings about  him starting his career as an actor and not being hood enough to be a rapper.  However, I think the note really sheds light on everything people claiming him to be – or not be.

Drake Started From The Bottom

The song takes me back to the So Far Gone days, where Drake would go off a laid back beat and rap about life without the glamour and lights. The past few years Drake got away from rapping and started getting more pop us which really hurt his popularity – amongst the majority of my friends.  However, by the looks of it, (hopefully) October’s Very Own is prepping to regain some of his lost momentum from 2009. Whats your guys take on the song?

Deadline Ltd. Spring 2013 Collection Preview

February 5th, 2013 by J W

With all the Super Bowl excitement going around, sports has been the theme of the weekend. Deadline Ltd. dropped sneak previews of their Spring 2013 collection that includes a selection of 7 graphic tees. Each tee is inspired by classic sport team logos and well thought out typography. I’ve always been a fan of bold script tees so their revisited classic logo has to be one of my favorites.

For those unfamiliar with Deadline Ltd., the company was founded by two based out of opposite ends of the country. The brand is heavy on graphic tees that represent style and culture from New York and Los Angeles. I respect brands that can drop heavy meaning through subtle and simple designs. Shout out to them for being a brand “for all demographics and nationalities”.

The Lonely Island feat Kendrick Lamar – YOLO

February 4th, 2013 by Ian

Drake released his song “The Motto” late in 2011 and it started a wave of misinterpretation and ill behavior. The acronym motto “You Only Live Once” or YOLO has taken the world by storm, sparking internet memes, twitter hashtags, and even clothing designs. The Lonely Island (Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, and Andy Samberg) of SNL had a different perspective on the motto and released their version of YOLO featuring Adam Levine and Kendrick Lamar.

Taking the opposite and cautious view of YOLO, The Lonely Island along with Adam Levine and Kendrick Lamar has hopefully put an end to the overused and abused term. I am personally glad they made this parody and who better to deliver this message than the biggest name in the game right now: Kendrick Lamar. I agree with the motto to a certain extent: Yes you should live your life to the fullest, because you only live once, however, you should make the right decisions and not the wrong ones because you only live once. If you haven’t viewed the video already, watch it below and drop a comment on what you think.

Reebok’s Retro Kamizake II

January 31st, 2013 by Trevor

Following the Air Jordan blueprint of retroing shoes, Reebok has recently started to bring back some of their greatest shoes of all time.  Starting with the re release of The Anwser’s in the latter part of 2012, Reebok opens the year with the retro of their best signature shoe of all time, Shawn Kemp’s Kamikaze II’s.

At a time when forwards weren’t suppose to be athletic, Shawn Kemp looked like a man amongst boys.  He had the athleticsm to dunk on just about anyone – and did so as he pleased.  For those who aren’t familiar with him (to sum up his style of play) he was Blake Griffin before Blake Griffin.

Overall the shoe looks and feels great.  Like the majority of Air Jordan retro’s, the shoe features a few alterations from the original release however, the shoe still remains to be very comfortable and lightweight (for being so bulky looking.) I like the quality of these much more than any recent Air Jordan because it seems like Reebok took their time piecing the shoe together. Reebok’s been killing it the past year after a few Allen Iverson retros and continue to build on their momentum bringing back signature shoes from their sponsored athletes. With more Kamikaze II releases in the works, the re-release of Shaq’s shoe along with  more Iverson’s, 2013 looks to be promising for Reebok.  Definitely looking forward to copping something else this year.
